How long to cook ham
The cooking time for ham depends mainly on its weight and how you’re cooking
it. As a starting point, the table below shows estimates in oven at 325°F (165°C) for the
pre-cooked, bone-in (reheat) method. Add the resting time, and remember a thermometer
is the only way to know it’s truly done.
Ham cooking time by weight
| Weight | Active cook (Pre-cooked, bone-in (reheat)) | + Rest |
| 3 lb | 40 min | 55 min |
| 6 lb | 1 hr 20 min | 1 hr 35 min |
| 8.5 lb | 1 hr 50 min | 2 hr 5 min |
| 11.5 lb | 2 hr 30 min | 2 hr 45 min |
| 14.5 lb | 3 hr 10 min | 3 hr 25 min |
| 17 lb | 3 hr 40 min | 3 hr 55 min |
| 20 lb | 4 hr 20 min | 4 hr 35 min |
Safe internal temperature
Cook to: Pre-cooked: heat to 140°F (60°C). Fresh/raw: 145°F (63°C)..
Tips
- Cover with foil to keep the ham from drying out while it heats.
- Brush on glaze during the last 20–30 minutes so the sugars don’t burn.
- Let it rest 15 minutes before slicing.
These times are estimates that vary with your oven, the starting temperature of the meat and
other factors. Always verify doneness with a food thermometer before serving.
